GKCMCA Mtg - 1/31/12

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Osborne at 6:40 pm at The Golden Ox. There were 23 members and one guest (Nicki Hertzog) present.

Craig Gordinier gave a Treasurer’s report that we had a total in the checking account of $25,521.31 and $28,630.75 in a CD. Some members have not yet paid their dues, so we plan to follow up with them.

Someone asked about the “Flashing Rodeo”. Since Vicki Enloe was not able to attend the meeting, we did not have a report as to this event.

Bill announced that the changes to the By-Laws were posted on the website.

Bill wants our focus in 2012 to include more involvement of the membership by serving on committees, providing reports and sharing information that would benefit the membership as a whole. He encouraged every member to visit the associations website and provide articles and information to be posted on the website as well.

Bill went through each of the committees and announced who would chair each, as follows:

  • Website – Bill Osborne/Craig Gordinier
  • Legislative – Tony DeNegri
  • Finance – Craig Gordinier
  • Promotions – Mike Larkin
  • Education – Vicki Enloe
  • Membership – Jim Schmidt
  • Codes and Enforcement – Don McMican
  • Safety and Insurance – Rebecca Speake

Bill encouraged the members to sign up for at least one committee. Committee chairmen are charged with recruiting members to serve on their team, setting committee meeting schedules and presenting a budget for their committee to the board of directors at the February 22nd BOD meeting.

Rick Frandsen made a motion that we invite the masonry division of JE Dunn to attend the next meeting. Mike Larkin seconded the motion. A discussion ensued. A vote was taken and the motion carried.

Bill suggested that we all need to do a better job of promoting masonry at every opportunity. “If we promote masonry, we all win.” He read the Mission Statement to the membership and it was approved unanimously to adopt it for the Association. “We the members and associate members of this association pledge ourselves to promote and encourage masonry construction, while exhibiting integrity and quality.”

Bill also read some suggested Code of Ethics. Discussion ensured regarding enforcement of the various codes. Bill asked that everyone email him with suggestions. A Code of Ethics will be finalized and voted on at the March membership meeting.

Some members started a discussion of the cost of masonry versus tilt up and the amount of time it takes to build a masonry way in place versus building a tilt wall in a controlled environment. With the mild winter we have had, the amount of lost work due to weather has been minimal.

A discussion followed regarding LEED AP training with Doug Cohee leading the discussion. The discussion centered around the notion that using recyclable materials is not enough, you need to be aware of the affects of thermal mass.

Mike Larkin was recognized for his hard work as the former President of the Association. Bill Osborne presented him with a plaque as well as a gift card as a “thank you” from the Association.

Rebecca gave out the door prizes and the meeting was adjourned.
